THE FIRST CHESS LESSON

Chess is a mirror of life-

You learn, practice, struggle, strive…

You win and lose, and try to survive.

And if you do, you want to thrive.

Before you begin, you need to know

Who is your King?  What do you stand for?

Remember too, no matter how smart,

You can’t win with half a heart.

Chess requires your full attention,

Heart-mind-body connection.

The other pieces are parts of the King,

On their own, their destiny is grim.

First make sure your King is safe.

Castle when you can and don’t delay.

You can’t castle in response to threat,

You can only do so if you think ahead.

In times of plenty set something aside,

You’ll be thankful when tough times arrive.

This I call the Joseph’s defense,

The seven fat cows… you know the rest.

Soon after the start you will see,

You are in uncharted territory.

Apply your strengths as best you can,

And don’t forget the bigger plan.

There is no simple formula for life,

But methods many are applied.

Whatever tool you choose to use,

You own the action, don’t abuse!

Each step you take is yours alone,

Your chances are unique, unknown.

But one thing’s clear all the time,

The King’s your soul, and soul is prime.

If you choose to not follow the rules

You’ll only end up playing fools.

If you dare to play fair,

you’ll win even when you happen to lose.

Good people will be your friends,

And they will help you make amends.

In their company you’ll grow-

the greatest victory of all.
